Wheat procurement picks up during lockdown!
New Delhi: Amidst the nationwide lockdown, wheat procurement is happening rapidly. In most states, the procurement exercise on April 15 is going on fast in Punjab, of which 48.27 lakh tonnes is the biggest contributor out of 88.61 lakh tonnes. Haryana has also contributed significantly to the central pool with 19.07 lakh tonnes._x000D_ "Given the restrictions during the lockdown, the procurement practice is likely to continue until June 30."_x000D_ During the procurement, Food Corporation of India (FCI), the central agency that procures and distributes food grains on behalf of the government, has sent 58.44 lakh tonnes of foodgrains through 2087 train loads to the surplus-consuming states during the lockdown period._x000D_ He said, “During this period, 1909 rakes of 53.47 LMT shares were also carried out, despite the announcement of several major fluctuating centers which were heavily strained._x000D_ He said that the Food Ministry has made adequate arrangements for distribution of food grains under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana (PMGKY), which provides 5 kg of free food grains to 80 million poor people for three months till June._x000D_ “Distribution is progressing well. The Union Territories of Ladakh and Lakshadweep have already lifted the full quota for 3 months.
