What do you know about the trap crops?
o Sowing or growing of crop in small area which is most preferred by the insect pests in main crop is known as trap crop, which are not intended for production.
o Female adult of main crop insect pest laid their eggs more on trap crops compared to main crop.
o Damage due to insect pests in major crop can be reducing by following trap crops.
o The population of natural enemies can also be increased by adopting trap crops.
o Trap crop should be raised at the time of sowing of main crop or early.
o Do not spray any kinds of insecticides on the trap crops.
o Follow regular necessary crop cultivation practices in trap crops.
o Grow two rows of mustard around the cabbage field and each after 25 rows of cabbage. The female moth of diamond back moth prefers lay eggs on mustard plants instead of cabbage plants. Simultaneously, population of aphids can also be reducing.
o Transplanting of one or two rows of marigold around the cotton or tomato field and also at each 10 rows, female adult of fruit borer prefer to lay eggs on marigold flowers instead of cotton/ tomato. Periodically, pluck the matured flowers of marigold.
o For leaf eating caterpillar damaging to cotton or groundnut, grow castor as trap crop around the field boundaries and also in between rows of cotton or groundnut. Collect and destroy the egg masses laid by leaf eating caterpillar periodically along with castor leaves.
o Grow marigold as trap crop around the tomato field and each after every 8 rows of tomato to manage the incidence of leaf miner.
o Raise Napier grass around the maize crop to reduce the damage caused by armyworm.
o Sowing of sann-hemp around the groundnut, soybean cowpea to reduce the damage caused by hairy caterpillars.
o Damage due to flea beetles in cabbage can be reducing while growing of radish as trap crop around the field.
