Vegetables of cucurbitaceae family
The flowers of cucurbitaceae family are monoecious, that is male and female flowers are different but grow on the same vine. The pollination of such flowers is mainly done by insects. Main vegetables of cucurbitaceae family are watermelon, muskmelon, pumpkin, sponge gourd, bottle gourd, winter melon, snake gourd, Pointed gourd, cucumber, round gourd, bitter gourd, etc. Climate and land: Growth of the vines is better in 25 to 30 degree celsius. These vegetables are mostly affected by frost. Fertile loamy soil with excellent drainage capacity is good for them. They are cultivated in both summer as well as rainy season.
Sowing season: Watermelon, muskmelon and cucumber in February-March; It is advisable to cultivate sponge gourd, bottle gourd, pumpkin, bitter gourd and round gourd as summer crops in February-March and as rainy season crops in June-July. For the prevention of diseases, before sowing, seeds should be treated by thiram @ 2 gram per kg of seeds. The time of sowing depends on the fact that these vegetables are being sown in river belts, or on plain soil. The following measures can be taken to cultivate the early crop. Since the germination of seeds is not proper at temperatures below 20 degrees Celsius, seeds should not be sown directly in the field, but sown in plastic bags. Mix seeds in 1/3 part of smooth clay, 1/3 part of sand and 1/3 part of dung. 2 seeds can be sown per bag. Cover the bags with polythene. Sow the seeds at appropriate temperature in the treated field. To sow the seeds directly in the field, soak them for 24 hours before sowing, then keep them in gunny bags for 24 hours. By planting seeds at the appropriate temperature makes the process of germination faster. After that, seeds can be sown in the field. This increases the percentage of germination.
