Treatment of Wheat Seeds to Prevent Termites
Wheat crop is cultivated as winter cereal crop in most states. This crop is either irrigated or non-irrigated. Monsoon continued to remain helpful this year, and more than adequate rainfall has been recorded, and farmers may proceed with this crop even in non-irrigated areas. There may be some damage being done by termites just after the crop has been germinated. Termite infestation is generally low in heavy and black soils. As a result of this pest, the damage is severe in sandy loam soil. The termite queen consistently lays eggs for a number of years and is difficult to control as she lives 7-8 feet below in the soil. Once the termites have settled in the area, the infestation is observed every year.
The workers of termites cut the plant parts closer to the soil surface and feed the root system. As a result, the plants turn yellowish and dry. These infested plants can be easily removed from the soil; this infestation is observed in patches. The infestation increases with the prolongation of the irrigation. Termites can harm, both at an early stage and at the time of panicle emergence._x000D_ _x000D_ Follow these control measures at the sowing time of wheat:_x000D_ • Remove and destroy the previous crop residues from the field before sowing of wheat._x000D_ • Apply only well-decomposed FYM in the field. _x000D_ • In place of FYM, farmer can also apply castor, neem or karanj cake @ 1 tonne per hectare. _x000D_ • Termites can be managed by performing seed treatment before sowing at low cost. For the seed treatment, take Bifenthrin 10 EC 200 ml or Fipronil 5 SC 500 ml or Chlorpyriphos 20 EC 400 ml and mix in 5 litres of water for 100 kg seed. Spread the seed on pakka floor or plastic sheet and spray this diluted solution on wheat. Wear rubber gloves and mix thoroughly by hands. The treated seed should be kept overnight for drying and used next morning for sowing. _x000D_ • If seed treatment is not given and infestation of termites is observed, mix Fipronil 5 SC 1.5 litre or Chlorpyriphos 20 EC 1.5 litre with 100 kg of sand. Spread them in standing crop and offer light irrigation. _x000D_ • Maintain moisture in the crop by providing irrigation regularly. Dr. T. M. Bharpoda, Ex. Professor of Entomology, B. A.
