When selecting male goat for breeding, it should be similar to the breed, have age of 1.5 to 2 years, one of the twins, healthy, having good reproductive capacity so that the next generation which will be its offspring, will be of good quality. Selection of goat - • The goats should be bought with the guidance of the veterinary doctor. • Generally a she goat should be selected which has one lambing.This will help us to understand all the other characteristics. e.g. number of lambs, milk production, disease, behaviour etc. • It is better if the goat is selected by checking her lineage. Its mother should be the one giving birth to twins. • The facts like the age of goat, number of lambs and milk production capacity should be checked. • The goat should be agile, bigger in size, hair should be soft and shiny. • If the goat is milch, it is important to check its udder and to check milk by extracting. • The goat should be straight, long from mouth to tail.
While selecting the male for breeding - • The male goat for breeding should be agile and should be one of the twins. This will help the next generation to be able to give good number of lambs. • The male goat should be strong and should show specific characteristics of its breed. • There should not be any physical disability. • It should look tall, long.
