Starch mills are importing maize from Ukraine
New Delhi. Starch Mills are importing non-GM maize from Ukraine through advance licenses. In April 2019, the central government had allowed import of one lakh tonnes of non-GM corn from 15 percent import duty. Amit Sachdev, Indian Representative of US Grain Council, said that maize is being imported under the advance license of Ukraine by a rate of $205 per tonne, and the importers will have to export it further. He said that so far, more than 80 thousand tonnes of maize have been imported. Import of starch is being done by the starch mills, that are located nearby seaport.
The imported maize price is $ 205 per tonne after reaching at Indian seaport, which includes transportation cost and other expenditure, after reaching the starch at mills located near the port, the price of maize is Rs 1,750 to Rs 1,800 per quintal. According to the second preliminary estimate of the Ministry of Agriculture, production of maize in the Rabi season is estimated to be 75.8 lakh tonnes in 2018-19 as compared to 76.3 lakh tonnes in Rabi last year.
