New Delhi: For the interests of farmers, the central government is considering introducing the new Seed Bill 2019 in the upcoming Lok Sabha session. The new bill proposes to increase the amount of fine on companies selling seeds of poor quality to a maximum of Rs 5 lakh. Currently, it is Rs 500 (minimum) and Rs 5,000 (maximum).
The government has asked all the parties to give their opinion on the new Seed Bill 2019 by 13 November 2019. A senior Agriculture Ministry official said that more than half of all seeds sold in the country are not certified by any proper testing institution and are often found to be of poor quality, causing heavy losses to farmers. is. Changes have been made in the proposed New Seed Bill 2019 in the interest of farmers. The Center is going to replace the Seeds Act, 1966 with a new bill. With this, the government is in the process of implementing changes like system of uniform certification for all seeds and barcoding of seeds.
