Rise in Cotton, Imports Expected to Increase
Cotton imports are expected to rise from 31-32 lakh bales (one bale-170 kg) further in the current season than in the domestic market.
Rakesh Rathi, President of the North India Cotton Association (CAI), said there are limited daily arrivals in productive markets due to low cotton stocks in the producing states. Within a week, cotton prices rose by about Rs. 2,000 per candy every week, from Rs. 46,000 to Rs. 46,500 per candy, compared to Rs. 44,000 to Rs. 44,500 per candy last week.
Approximately 2.5 million bales have been imported during the current CAI season. Cotton exports are estimated to be 42-43 lakh bales in the current season, while 69 lakh bales were exported in the last crop season. Cotton production in the current 2018-19 crop season is estimated at 315 lakh bales, whereas 365 lakh bales were produced last year.
