Reasons and Remedies for ruminal tympany ( stomach bloating) in the cattle
Normally, cattle are fed with chaff, green fodder and oil cake. Good quality fodder is not available for the cattle through all the seasons, and so most of the times, animals are fed with the low quality fodder, which causes ruminal tympany and other digestive system diseases in animals. Some times, ruminal tympany is so severe that it causes death of animals. Causes • Excessive intake of tender fodder, having in-excess contents of protein, fermentable green fodder of jowar, bajra, peas and corn contribute for ruminal tympany. If animal feed contains in-excess of bagasse, it causes the stomach to bloat. • Blocking of esophagus, intestinal hernia, tetanus in animals, swelling of esophagus and stomach, infection of worms and deficiency of calcium in the body causes ruminal tympany. • In some animals, the quantity of saliva secreted in the mouth is less, due to heredity. So, during food intake or mastication, saliva does not get mixed with the food in required proportion. This too causes tympany of rumen. • Cobs of jowar, wheat, bajra, grain fodder when consumed without water also cause stomach bloating. Non-edible items like wire, nail, wood, steel sheet, leather, cloth, plastic or any such non-digestive item if consumed, causes stomach bloating. Symptoms: • Firstly, animal does not eat or drink any thing. It becomes drowsy. • Shape of the stomach, especially the left half increases in size, animal stretches its eyes and neck, due to problem in the stomach animal holds the teeth tightly, it kicks the stomach with the rear legs, it looks at the left half of the stomach, it breaths through mouth and the saliva drools out of its mouth. • Increased gas in the stomach puts pressure on lungs and heart, which causes respiratory problem to the animal. Water level in the body reduces. • If the left half of the stomach of the animal is patted, it sounds like there is gas in the stomach. In some cases the stomach bloating increases so much that the pressure of stomach exerts high pressure on the lungs and animal faints due to suffocation. If the pressure on the lungs increases excessively, the animal suffocates and dies.
Treatment • As soon as the symptoms of stomach bloating are observed, take advice of the veterinary doctor immediately. Fodder and water which form gas in the stomach, should be stopped immediately. Tie the animal in such a way, that its front legs remain on the upper side and rear legs on lower side, so that inflated stomach does not exert pressure on the lungs. • Do not give excess of tender fodder, having excess quantity of protein, fermentable green fodder of jowar, bajra, peas and corn vegetables, sugarcane molasses, bagasse. • To avoid attack of the worms, give the deworming medicine to the animals after every 3 months. Every day give 50 gram of salt mixture through the feed. Left over rotten food, vegetables should not be given. • Do not allow to take excess amount of cobs of jowar, wheat, bajra and grain fodder. Take care so that animal should not eat items like wire, nail, wood, steel sheet, leather, cloth, plastic or any such non-edible item and these items should not enter their stomach.
