Rabi crops sowing lagging by 11.59%
New Delhi: Due to the unseasonal rains in October and November in several states of the country, sowing of Rabi crops has fallen by 11.59 per cent to only 148.23 lakh hectares. Pulses sowing is lagging behind wheat, the major Rabi crop, while oilseed sowing has improved with coarse cereals. However, sowing of rabi crops is still at an early stage. Their sowing is expected to increase further. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, in the current season, rabi crops have been sown in only 148.23 lakh hectares, whereas till last year, they had been sown in 167.67 lakh hectares. Sowing of wheat, the major Rabi crop, has been reduced to 32.98 lakh hectare in the current Rabi season. Similarly, sowing of pulses has been reduced to 45.60 lakh hectares in the current Rabi season. Gram, the main crop of rabi pulses, has been sown in 32.48 lakh hectare. Coarse cereals have been sown in 17.26 lakh hectares in the current Rabi whereas by this time last year it had been sown in 17.20 lakh hectares. Sowing of Rabi oilseeds has increased to 47.36 lakh hectares in the current Rabi season.
