Protect figs from the rust disease
The infestation of rust disease increases at the time when the temperature is low and humidity is high. This disease is caused by a fungus, Cerotelium fici. Due to the infestation of this fungus, the fruits get blackish coloured spots.The fruits do not ripe well.They get rotten early.Therefore, we need to control this disease at this stage.
Symptoms -
Many blackish spots are observed on the fruits.Such fruits do not ripe well. They become hard and get rotten as soon as they ripe.
If there is high infestation, the leaves of the tree become yellow and drop.In severely infested orchard, only fruits and branches reamain.As a result, the growth of fruits in such orchards gets stunted.The exposed fruits get lesions due to heat of the sun.
control
१) Prune the orchard. It decreases the number of infested branches and vigorous shoots come out at these places.
२) Keep the orchard clean. Infested leaves, fruits and pruned infested branches should be collected and should be burnt outside the orchard.
३) After new leaves emerge, approximately 20 days after the pruning, Chlorothalonil 20 gms + carbendazim 10 gm should be added to 10 liters of water and should be sprayed.
Next sprayings should be done as per the advice of the experts.
