Prevent mastitis in milch animals on time
Mastitis: Mastitis is the “swelling of udders”. From the scientific point of view, Mastitis is swelling of udders due to physical, chemical and biological reasons. Along with it the milk production of cows and buffaloes totally stops or decreases. This disease is not only related with the swelling of udders but it makes the animal infertile for temporary period of time. If not treated in time, the animal becomes permanently infertile, which leads to heavy financial losses. It is essential to take preventive measures for this disease. For that, manage the cow shed well.
Preventive measures for avoiding the disease: Cleaning of the shed Cow shed and surroundings should be cleaned with disinfectants from time to time. The dung pit should be at 50 meter distance from the shed. If any animal is infected, it should be kept away from the other animals. That animal should be milked in the end. Cleaning of the animals By cleaning the animals daily or by washing them, the dust and dung on their bodies is removed. So the milk produced is clean. The blood flow improves. Before milking, wash the udders of the cattle with water and dry with a clean cloth. Use Potassium Permanganate to wash the udder. Cleaning of milking machine If a milking machine is being used for milking, it should be cleaned on time. Milking method Use the full hand method to milk the cattle. If milking is done with a thumb or using a pinch, it might harm the udders of the cattle. The wound might get infected. Drying the pregnant animals in a proper way Drying an animal means stopping to milk it. This is generally done in the 8th month of pregnancy. Milking should not be suddenly stopped for drying high milk producing animals. There is high possibility of Mastitis in such cases. Reference- Agrowon 4th October 17
