Part I - Pests on Sugarcane crop
White grub (Holotrichia serrata) In the pests causing nuisance to the sugarcane, white grub has a considerably higher number.English letter C shaped larva found in while ploughing the field, or in a manure pit is white grub. In India, some major pests are responsible for large extent damage to the crops. Out of theses pests, white grub, is one, and it is known as National pest.White grub, in all developing stages remains under the soil, so,it causes heavy damage to the crops. Deforestation, climatic change, lack of integrated pests control, all theses are the reasons, observed for spreading of infestation of white grub heavily. In Maharashtra, a type of white grub named Holotrichia serrata is found, which feeds on the roots of sugarcane. The beetles of white grub can travel up to 2.5 kilometer under the soil in search of foodstuff. It spreads fast from one place to another, through organic fertilizers.
Types of damages- In the first stage when larva of white grub, comes out from the egg, it survives on the foodstuff from the rotten organic substances available in the soil, if it gets the fresh roots, larva feeds itself completely on roots. After this, in second and third stages, larvae eat roots of sugarcane and other crops in the month of June to October. In the month of November to January white grub makes pupa, deep in the soil below 90 to 120 cm depth. The adult comes out of the pupa, and lie in the soil without any food till the summer rains. In sugarcane, these larvae damage the roots. Since the roots are destroyed, the intake of food and water of the crops stops. Infested sugarcane crop looks dull and the leaves appear langoured, slowly leaves start becoming yellowish, and finally get dried up. Since the roots of the sugarcane teared off by the pests, sugarcane as a whole get dry up. Controlling of the white grub must be done at proper time (May-August). Even though, only one breed of white grub takes birth within 12 months, the longer life span of the larvae, and having capacity of eating food from the roots of the crops, these things cause the maximum destruction of the crop.
