New sugarcane variety MS 10001
There is a new variety of sugarcane, MS 10001 which gives more yield of sugarcane and sugar, has early maturity, is less susceptible to diseases and pests, grows well even in saline soil, has good yield of ratoon crop and hence, is very beneficial to farmers.
The sugar factories need varieties which give more sugar recovery and come early for crushing. At the same time, farmers need varieties which give a high yield. Considering both these things, the Central Sugarcane Research Center, Padegaon, has developed a new variety, MS 10001. The tests of this variety has been conducted from the year 2010 at Padegaon, Kolhapur, Vasantdada Sugar Institute, Pune and Pravara Nagar in Maharashtra. In all the 33 tests, the yield of this variety was more than CO-M 0265, CO-86032 and VSI 434 varieties by 2.09,11.31 and 32.74% and sugar yield was 9.04,11.31 and 32.74 % more respectively. • This variety has been developed by the cross breeding of CO-M 0265 (Phule 265) and MS 0602. In the meeting of Common Agricultural Research and Development Conference of all the four agricultural universities in Maharashtra, held in May 2017, this variety has been promoted for Suru and pre-season cultivation in Maharashtra. • In the national level technical seminar of All India Co-ordinated Sugarcane Research Scheme, which was held at the Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Coimbatore on 1st September 2017, the early maturing variety, 10001 (10 to 12 months) got first rank in the six of the tropical south Indian states (Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra,Tamilnadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh). Characteristics of the variety: • Early maturing variety (10 to 12 months) • Number of sugarcane canes suitable for crushing is (average 1,00,000/hectare), thickness is (3.5 cm.s) and the average weight of the sugarcane is (1.56 kg) and it is more than CO-86032. • The average sugarcane production as (137.88 tonnes/hectare) and sugar yield as (19.87 tonnes/hectare). • In the current season, the average production per hectare is (135.76 tonnes/hectare) and sugar yield (19.75 tonnes/hecatre). In the pre-season, the average production per hectare is (151.36 tonnes/hecatre) and sugar yield (22.02 tonnes/hecatre). • Grows well in the medium to heavy soil as well as in saline and sticky soil (pH 8.5 to 9.5). The yield is also good. • Sheath is removed easily, so easy to harvest. Less spines on leaf blade. • The leaves are green and the amount of crest is very low. So the leaves can be used as fodder. • Recommended for current and pre-season. Ratoon yield is also good. • Resistant to the diseases like whip smut, wilt and red rot. • Less attack of pests like stem borer, cane borer, shoot borer and woolly aphids. • The variety is tolerant to water stress. • Even if the harvesting is late, sugarcane does not become hollow from inside. So its weight and sugar recovery does not decrease. Suitable for cultivation in saline soil: • Grows better than other varieties in saline soil. So gives good income, too. • As it can tolerate water stress, it can be cultivated in the area having less water availability. • The ratoon has good shoot growth and the number of canes is good and the thickness of the canes is uniform. It is possible to take 3 to 4 ratoons from this variety. So it saves the expenses. Reference-Agrowon 27th September 17.
