Animal HusbandryAgrowon
Measures for hoof diseases in cattle.
Mainly contagious hoof diseases are observed in the cattle. These diseases affect milk production of the cattle. The swamp and uncleanliness in the shed cause the hoof diseases.
Measures: • The hoofs of cattle should be kept dry and clean. • The urine and dung in the shed should be cleaned on time. Do not let water accumulate in the shed. Make proper arrangement for drainage of waste water. • If a bedding of thick saw dust is prepared in the shed, the cattle do not come in contact with the urine and dung. The cleaning of the hooves is done automatically due to the layer of saw dust. • Along with the cleaning of the shed, if the sterilization of hooves and shed is done regularly, the hoof diseases can come down. • Foot bathing is very beneficial for preventing the hoof diseases. • Timely hoof trimming is important part for the health of hooves. Due to the uneven growth of the hooves, the animals find it difficult to balance body on all the legs. So they become susceptible to the hoof diseases early. • If any cow or animal is limping, get it treated as per the advice of the veterinary doctor. Reference – Agrowon, December 17.
