Mastitis in the milch animals
Mastitis is the most observed and most frequently observed disease in the milch animals. It affects both the quality of milk and productivity of the milk.If not treated timely, the udders are permanently damaged and the animals becomes unproductive.If this disease is controlled, we can avoid the cost of medical treatment and financial loss due to that.
Symptoms
1. The udder swells.If touched, it causes pain.
2. The udder secretes yellowish secretion and it attracts flies.
3. The milk is watery or yellow and the milk gets spoiled.
4. In more serious condition, swelling is observed on the hind legs (around udder) of the animal.
5. The animal gets tired and remains unenergetic.
6. The body temperature increases and food intake decreases.
Diagnosis
1. If flies are observed near the udder of the animals in summer.
2. This disease is also diagnosed using California mastitis test.
Treatment
1. Get animals treated with the help of veterinary doctor.
2. At first, take the bad secretion out from the affected udders.After that inject antibiotic medicine in the udders.It helps to decrease the infestation of the bacteria.
Prevention and control
1. Keep the cattle shed clean.
2. Take care that the udders of the animals are not damaged.
3. Before milking the animal, wash the udders properly with clean water
4. Before milking the animal, wash the hands, cleanly too.
5. The milk from the infested udder should be taken out last in a separate utensil and should be thrown away.
6. As per the advice of veterinary doctor, use antiseptic medicine available in the market. Every time after the milking is done, teat-dip the udders of the animal.
