Management of plant viral diseases_x000D_
By managing plant viral diseases in crops, there is a chance of producing good quality produce and high yields. Viral diseases cause enormous economic losses. Most of the viruses are spread by insects, but some viruses are spread mechanically through the exposure of plant wounds to infected sapo. Infected plants show wide range of symptoms like leaf yellowing, leaf distortion and other growth distortions. Suggestions to prevent virus infestation: If the plant viruses are prevailing in an area continuously, farmers have to go for crop rotation to avoid the availability of the same host. Selection of viral free planting materials such as cuttings, rhizomes, tubers and seeds. Cultivation of trap crops will avoid disease causing insect vectors, for example, marigold in bhendi to control white fly. Application of soil fumigants to control nematodes to prevent nematodes transmitted virus diseases. Destruction of weeds that serve as hosts for the virus causing viral disease in plants, for example, broadleaf weeds in banana. Cultivation of resistant varieties will avoid viral disease in plants. Application of insecticides will control the insect vectors that serve as host for the virus. For cutting, grafting or propagating vegetable seedlings, use cleaner or sanitized tools and equipment, wash hands frequently. Some plant viruses are permanently inactivated by prolonged exposure of infected tissue to relatively high temperatures. Hot water treatment can be more effective against some viruses.
