Management of paddy leaf hoppers
Green, brown and white backed plant hoppers are damaging to paddy crop. Both nymph and adult suck the cell sap from the plants. Infested plants become yellow or brown and dry off. Burning effect is seen on heavy infestation which is known as “Hopper Burn”. Infestation is increasing in circular way in the field and showed burns crops known as “Hopper Burn”. In infested plants, grains remain immature in panicles and hence production gone down. Within a week, the infestation cover the total field.
Management: o Use recommended nitrogenous fertilizers in three splits. o Drain out the water on initiation of the pest. o Carry the regular monitoring as initially infestation remain in few spots. Apply insecticides on those spots only and cut down the expenditure. o Apply carbofuran 3G or fipronil 0.3 GR @ 20-25 kg or phorate 10 G @ 10 kg or chlorantraniliprole 0.5% + thiamethoxam 1% GR 6 kg per hectare in soil. o In later stage, if application of granular insecticides is not possible than spray acephate 75 SP 10 g or imidacloprid 17.8 SL 3 ml or clothianidin 50 WG 5 g or buprofezin 25 SC 20 ml or fipronil 5 SC 20 ml or dinotofuran 20 SG 4 g or fenobucarb50 EC 20 ml or thiamethoxam 25 WG 2 g or lambda cyhelothrin 2.5 EC 10 ml per 10 lit of water. o With application of these insecticides, stem borer and leaf folder is also controlled.
