Management of fruit fly in mango orchards!_x000D_ _x000D_ _x000D_
Different varieties of mangoes are being cultivated in India. Farmers are getting revenue by exporting mangoes to other countries. The mangoes that are meant for export should not contain pesticide residues and should not be infested with fruit flies that damage the fruit. Otherwise, the shipped product will be returned. Generally, fruit fly infestation starts in the mango at ripening stage and hence spraying of any type of insecticide is not advisable at this stage. Collect fallen fruits periodically and bury them in deep pits. Tulasi plants should be planted around the garden and periodically spray insecticide when fruit flies gather on these plants. Methyl eugenol ply wood blocks and pheromone traps should be installed @ 5–7 per acre. These traps can also be prepared at home. Once installed there is no need to change these traps again. Box nets can also be made manually as per the recommendation of Navsari Agricultural University. For this purpose, prepare a solution of methyl eugenol + solvent + dichlorvos (4: 6: 1). Dip the box in this solution for some time or paint the box with a prepared solution using a brush. Make large holes on the box for the fruit flies to enter. Collect and destroy the fruit flies caught in trays every week. Sprinkle poison fodder (rotten jaggery 500 g + DDVP 76 EC @ 10 ml + 10 liters of water) spray this solution on all sides of mango trees.
