Management of chick pea pod borer
There is a lot of variety in the larva of this insect. It can be light pink, yellow, or black green, brown in colour. There are white verticle lines on both the sides of the body of this insect. The larva makes lesions on new leaves or pods. The larva grows very fast and starts feeding on flowers and pods. They are voracious feeders. When the gram plant starts bearing pods, the larvae has a speciality to make holes in the pods and insert half of their body inside them.
o For catching male insects, 40 pheromone traps per hectare should be installed. The eggs laid by female insect remain unfertilized due to the decrease in male insects. Thus, its infestation decreases in every generation. Better results can be obtained if this method is used collectively, on a large scale. o The adult insects are nocturnal hence they are attracted towards light. So, in the farm wherever lights can be arranged, put water filled trays below all the electric bulbs. Also, put 1-2 drops of insecticide in the water. During night, the insects will be attracted towards light, fall into water and die. This method is very beneficial. o NPV of this larva is available. As soon as small larvae are observed in the crop, spray 250 LV of the NPV. This will affect the larvae by spreading a viral disease in it and eventually the larvae will be killed. o Arrange tree perches for the birds which feed on the larvae of this insect. o Initially, mix and spray Beauveria Bassiana (1 x 10 9) 10 grams per 10 liters of water. o For protection against the pod borer, mix and spray Fenvalerate 20 EC 10 ml or Monocrotophos 36SL 10 ml or Lambda Cyhalothrin 5 EC 5 ml in 10 liters of water or use Fenvalerate 0.4% powder @25 kg/hectare. o If the crop sown for harvesting green chick peas is sprayed with 500 gm (5% extract) neem seed extract powder, mixed in 10 liters of water, it is effective against the chick pea pod borer. Ready to use neem based medicine is available in the market for use. For this, mix and spray ready to use medicine 20 ml(1 EC) to 40 ml (0.15 EC) or 50 ml neem oil + 10 gm washing powder per 10 liters of water. o In such cases where there is a severe attack of the pod borer, mix and spray Emamectin Benzoate 5 SG 3 gm or Indoxacarb 15.8 EC 4 ml or Flubendiamide 48 SC 5 ml or Thiodicarb 75 WP 20 gm or chlorantriniprole 20 SC 5ml in 10 liters of water, for protection against its larvae. o Adults and mature larvae do not get killed even if the insecticides are used. If possible such larvae should be hand picked and destroyed. o It is very important to note that you must change the pesticide every time while spraying. Dr. T. M. Bharpoda Ex.
