Maize cultivation on 75 lakh hectares of land
New Delhi: The heavy rains in parts of South and Central India last week, has helped Kharif maize cultivation in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. The area under Kharif maize so far has been 7.5 million hectares, up by 2% from last year. So far this year, the sowing area has topped the general area (7.4 million hectares).
Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh had the highest number of sowing this year. The major producers of Kharif maize are Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Farmers are expected to pay more for the crop, despite fears of an outbreak of the Fall Army worm on crops in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, agronomists said.
