Leaf eating caterpillars in groundnut crop
 Most of the farmers have completed the sowing of groundnut seeds.  In addition to the leaf eating caterpillars, Helicoverpa and leaf miner is also observed in this season.  The incidence of these caterpillars is generally more during early stages of crop.  The infestation of leaf eating caterpillars is much more under high humid conditions.  Young caterpillar scrap the chlorophyll content of the leaves and feed on them, while in later stage defoliate the leaves leaving behind the veins of leaves.  At noon, caterpillars hide in the crack & crevices of the soil near the stem of the plants.  If population is observed during the reproductive stage of the crop, they can also damage to developing pods in soil.  Install pheromone traps.  On initiation of pest, spray neem based formulation @ 20 ml (1% EC) to 40 ml (0.15% EC) or Beauveria bassiana a fungus base powder @ 40 g or Bacillus thuringiensis, a bacterial base powder @ 10 g or SNPV 250 LE @ 10 ml by dissolving in 10 lit of water.  Two sprays of pongamia (karanj oil) oil or ponneem @ 30 ml per 10 lit of water at 15 days interval should be given starting from pest infestation. To prepare ponneem, mix 450 ml of neem oil + 450 ml of pongamia oil (karanj oil) + 100 ml of soap solution (wetting agent) (recommendation of Junagadh Agril. Uni.).  On higher incidence, spray thiamethoxam 12.6% + lambda cyhelothrin 9.5% ZC @ 4 ml or methomyl 40 SP @ 12 g per 10 lit of water.  On infestation of leaf miner, spray deltamethrin 2.8 EC @ 10 ml or lambda cyhelothrin 5 EC @ 5 ml per 10 lit of water.  Control measures taken for leaf eating caterpillars can also control the population of Helicoverpa, if persist.
