Integrated Management of okra shoot & fruit borers (IPM)
o Generally spotted bollworm and Helicoverpa larval infestation is much more in kharif sown crop than the summer sown crop. o Both are damaging to shoots & also pods of okra. o Instead of spraying chemical insecticides on initiation of the fruit borer, spray neem seed kernel powder 500 g i.e. 5% or neem oil @ 50 ml or neem base formulations @ 20 ml (1% EC) to 40 ml (0.15% EC) or Beauveria bassiana, fungus base powder @ 40 g per 10 lit of water. o Spray should be made at evening time and plants should be covered properly at 10 days interval. o Install pheromone traps @ 40 per hectare for the spotted bollworm and Helicoverpa to minimize the population of adults. o Press the infested shoots with fingers to kill the larva present inside or collect & destroy the infested shoots. o Do regular picking of okra pods. o Pick up the infested pods by the larvae at each picking. o Infested and over matured pods should be not be remain on plant itself. o Separate out the infested pods from the harvested lot and fed to animals. o Okra cultivated under organic farming, spray Bacillus thuringiensis, a bacterial base powder @ 20 g or B. bassiana, a fungus base powder @ 40 g per 10 lit of water during evening time thoroughly. o NPV (Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus) for Helicoverpa is available, spray it @ 250 LE (larval equivalent) with 500 lit of water per hectare during evening time. o Even after spraying of these bio-pesticides, if infestation showed increasing trend, spray fenvalerate 20 EC @ 10 ml or chlorantraniliprole 18.5 SC @ 3 ml or emamectin benzoate 5 WG @ 5 g or deltamethrin 1% + traizophos 35% EC @ 10 ml or cypermethrin 10 EC @ 10 ml or deltamethrin 2.8 EC @ 10 ml or lambda cyhelothrin 4.9 CS @ 5 ml or pyridalyl 10 EC @ 10 ml or pyriproxyfen 5% + fenpropathrin 15% EC @ 10 ml or quinalphos 25 EC @ 20 ml per 10 lit of water.
