IMD to Deliver Localized Weather Across 660 Districts by 2020
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is working at a steady pace to deliver localized weather forecasts to all 6,500 blocks across 660 districts in the country by 2020 and help as many as 9.5 crore farmers deal with weather vagaries.
The most challenging task, however, would be to improve the accuracy of weather forecasts and make Agromet Advisory Services (AAS) more useful and user-friendly. IMD is currently issuing district-level advisories. It linked up with the Indian Agricultural Research Council (ICAR) in 2018 to extend weather forecasting and block-level AAS. IMD has a network of 130 district-level agromet field units to dissimulate weather-based advisories. Efforts are being made to set up such units in additional 530 districts in the country under the ' Gramin Krishi Mausam Sewa' at Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs). As of now, 4 crore farmers are receiving district-level weather forecast through SMS and mKisan portals. By 2020, it is targeted to cover 9.5 crore farmers by extending block-level services.
