Girdle beetle in soybean
• Girdle beetle is also known as soybean stem borer.
• These grubs are white in colour with soft body and black head.
• Female adult make two circular rings on stem or branches and lays eggs in-between these rings, i.e just above the lower ring. Rings are clearly visible on stem.
• The grub enters into the stem and feed on the internal content. As a result, leaves dry off.
• In addition, the main shoot of plant dries out and show wilting symptoms.
• Follow crop rotation every year.
• The infestation remains lower in the crop after onset of the monsoon. Do not go for early sowing.
• The infestation generally remains more during August – September.
• Varieties like NRC-12 and NRC-7 are tolerant, hence prefer them.
• Collect & destroy the infested plant parts regularly.
• Follow recommended seed rate. Infestation increases if plant population is higher in a unit area.
• Destroy crop residues after harvesting the crop.
• Keep the crop weed free. Don’t let weeds grow especially cocklebur.
• Avoid using excessive nitrogenous fertilizers.
• Infestation is higher if maize or sorghum is intercropped with soybean.
• Give seed treatment with imidacloprid 600 FS @ 9 ml per kg of seed.
• Apply phorate 10 G @ 10 kg/ ha in furrow at the time of sowing by mixing with sand .
• If pest incidence is severe, spray chlorantraniliprole 18.5 SC @ 3 ml or ethion 50 EC @ 10 ml or indoxacarb 15.8 EC @ 10 ml or lambda cyhelothrin 4.9 CS @ 5 ml or thiacloprid 21.7 SC @ 10 ml or profenophos 50 EC @ 10 ml or triazophos 40 EC @ 20 ml or thiamethoxam 12.6% + lambda cyhelothrin 9.5% ZC @ 5 ml per 10 lit of water.
