Gerbera Export Quality Flower Production Technologies
To grow gerbera in the greenhouse, select the best water evaporating area. For the production of quality flowering, tissue cultured plants should be cultivated in the greenhouse. This crop provides maximum yield when applied to improved technology. Variety Selection: Varieties should be selected depending on market or customer demand. Land Selection: Select the well water drained soil for gerbera cultivation (5.5 to 6.0 in Soil). Planting: After soil disinfection, crops should be planted at a spacing of 30 cm x 30 cm (7 to 9 per metre) after consultation with experts. Select seedlings prepared using a tissue-cultured technique. Do not plant the seedlings at a greater depth and maintain the suitable number of crops in the greenhouse. Water Management: Provide water at the all-cropping stage as per crop condition or requirement. Fertilizer Management: Application of farm yard manure @10 kg per sq. mixed well with Trichoderma viride, Basilomyces, and neem cake together with farmyard manure. According to soil testing, application of fertiliser should be done. In the initial stages of growth, 19:19:19 @ 2 kg should be given at a 4 days intervals. After flowering, 12:61:00 @3 kg per acre should be given at 5 to 6 days intervals for more flowering. In addition to fertilisers, micro-nutrients also should be provided before flowering or after flowering stage i.e. Boron, Calcium, Magnesium, etc. Spray Boron, Calcium, and Magnesium @ 1.5 ml per litre of water once in a month. In addition, for flowering, 13:00:45 @ 3 kg per acre should be given at 5 to 6 days intervals per acre. Micronutrients should be provided by drip irrigation for high-quality flowers. It also increases quality by increasing flowers production. Harvesting: • Gerbera flowers are usually harvested from 8 to 10 weeks of planting. • After flowering two layers of flower petals, only flowers should be harvested at that moment. • The flowers should be trimmed 3 to 4 cm below the waist after cutting. • Usually, the flowers should be plucked in the morning. • Dip the cut ends of the flowers and keep them in the bucket of water. • To keep the flowers fresh and healthy, prepare a sodium hypochlorite solution of 7 to 10 ml of water per litre and immerse them in the solution. • Alter this solution for every gerbera flower harvest.
