Food production in Kharif estimated to be higher than last year
New Delhi: The production of food grains in the current Kharif is estimated to be higher than last year's 14.17 million tonnes. Union Minister of State for Agriculture Purushottam Rupala said that this time during the monsoon season, there has been good rainfall throughout the country due to which the production of Kharif crops is expected to be high, it is also good for the sowing of Rabi crops.
He said that due to excessive rains, 12 states of the country have been flooded, but in spite of this, food production is expected to be high. The reservoir is also full due to excess rainfall during the Kharif season in the country. He said that the country has become almost self-sufficient in pulses but there is a need to increase the production of oilseeds so that dependence on imports can be reduced.
In the crop season 2019-20, the target of production of pulses has been set at 263 lakh tonnes, while the record production of wheat has been set to be 10.05 million tonnes. The target of rice production is estimated at 1160 million tonnes in the current Kharif.
