Dehorning of Calves at Right Time and Their Benefit
Cattles are equipped with horns to defend and protect themselves. Horns assist in the identification of cattle breeds; however, it is difficult to control and manage them as horns could contribute to fear of harm among mankind. Animals get harmed when the horn is broken and can also be at danger of horn cancer. Hornless cattle are usually appealing, and their market values are also comparatively high.
Technique:_x000D_
The horns are destroyed a few days after their birth in order to make the cattle hornless. This must be performed within 10-15 days for the cow's calf and 7-10 days for the buffalo's calf, because the root of the horn is detached from the spinal bone (skull), which can be removed easily, and also to reduce pain and injury._x000D_
Precautions:_x000D_
Previously, in order to dehorn the calves, caustic potash was applied in place of the horns, which helped to destroy the root of the horn. But now this procedure is conducted by means of a special electrical instrument known as an electric dehorner, by means of which a small surgery is conducted. The placenta of the horned roots is numbed by injection so that the cattle are pain-free during surgery. A fairly small quantity of antiseptic cream should be applied to the small wound in the skin that will assist to heal it in a short period of time._x000D_
