Cumin Cultivation through Modern Method
Cumin is used as a spice, and its cultivation is more lucrative than any other. However, in the event of inadequate information about weather, seeds, fertilisers and irrigation for the cultivation of cumin plants, losses could be incurred. Suitable soil and climate: Cumin can be cultivated in all soil types, but sandy loam or loam soil is best suited for its cultivation. The temperature at the time of sowing of cumin should be 24-28 degrees Celsius. Higher temperatures are probable to cause germination issues. Preparation of the field: In order to obtain a higher yield of cumin, a deep plough from the soil plough and two or three light ploughs from the traditional plough or harrow should level the soil.
Sowing Time: The ideal time to sow cumin is from mid-October to mid-November. Manures and Fertilisers: 8 to 10 tonnes of cow dung manure 30 kg Urea, 20 kg Phosphorus (single super manure) and 90% sulphur 10-12 kg should be used in the cumin field. Seed Rate and Seed Treatment: For the sowing of cumin seeds, 12-15 kg of seed per hectare should be sown in the field. Before sowing, cumin seeds should be treated with vitavax at a rate of 2.5-3 grams per kg to safeguard them from seed-borne illnesses. Irrigation: Irrigation should be performed immediately after sowing. Remember that the irrigation should be light and that the second irrigation should be done 7 days after sowing. Cumin should not be irrigated at the point of flowering. Diseases and Pests: Ukhtha disease, blight, powdery mildew, mahoo, green weeds, thrips, etc. diseases and pests can be prevented by periodic plant inspection. Harvesting: Depending on the variety of cumin, the local weather, the irrigation system, the crop is matured and ready in 90 to 120 days.
