Country’s Sugar Exports have Risen to 17.44 lakh tonnes
New Delhi: To date, the country's sugar exports have risen to 17.44 lakh tonnes in the current marketing year ending September, compared to about 5 lakh tonnes shipped throughout 2017-18. Of the 17.44 lakh tonnes exported between October 1 and April 6, raw sugar accounted for almost 8 lakh tonnes, the All India Sugar Trade Association (AISTA) said in a statement. About 4.3 lakh tonnes are in the export pipeline. "Total sugar export contract so far is around 27 lakh tonnes, out of which 21.7 lakh tonnes have been dispatched from mills," according to R P Bhagria, CEO of AISTA.
In the last marketing year, India had exported around 5 lakh tonnes of sweetener in the midst of lower global market prices, making Indian shipments uncompetitive. Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Somalia and Iran are the main export destinations. The Centre asked mills to export 50 lakh tonnes of sugar to liquidate surplus stock in the 2018-19 marketing year (October-September). The government provides various incentives to boost sugar exports. India's sugar production is estimated to decline from 325 tonnes of lakh in the previous year to around 310 lakh tonnes in the current marketing year. The country still has surplus stocks as the annual domestic demand is around 260 lakh tonnes and mills carry a huge stock from the previous year.
