In the last marketing year, India had exported around 5 lakh tonnes of sweetener in the midst of lower global market prices, making Indian shipments uncompetitive. Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Somalia and Iran are the main export destinations. The Centre asked mills to export 50 lakh tonnes of sugar to liquidate surplus stock in the 2018-19 marketing year (October-September). The government provides various incentives to boost sugar exports. India's sugar production is estimated to decline from 325 tonnes of lakh in the previous year to around 310 lakh tonnes in the current marketing year. The country still has surplus stocks as the annual domestic demand is around 260 lakh tonnes and mills carry a huge stock from the previous year.
