Cotton Production to Witness Increase by 13.62%
Cotton production is estimated to increase by 13.62% to 354.50 lakh bales (one lump-170 kg) during the current harvest season 2019-20, which began on 1 October. In October-November, five lakh bales of cotton exports were carried out, while imports of similar quantities were also taken.
According to the second preliminary estimate by the Cotton Association of India (CAI), cotton production is estimated at 354.50 lakh bales compared to only 312 lakh bales produced last year. CAI continued the earlier estimate but in some states modified the amount of production. According to the association, the yield in North India may be reduced by 2.50 lakh bales to 63 lakh bales compared to the earlier estimate of 65.5 lakh bales. At the same time, production in the central region is reduced by one lakh bales to 195 lakh bales instead of 196 lakh bales.
According to CAI, in the first two months of the current crop season, October-November, cotton exports amounted to 5 lakh bales, while similar amounts were imported. In the current season, imports of cotton are expected to be only 2.5 million bales compared to 32 bales of cotton exported last year.
