Control Stem Borer and Fall Armyworm in Summer Maize
Summer maize is grown in the maximum area. Stem borer and new four spotted armyworms are generally observed to be damaging during the early crop growth stage. The larva of the stem borer enters the plant through the leaf whorl. A parallel hole on newly emerging leaves indicates its damage. The central shoot is withered, which is known as the "dead heart."
Management: • Apply neem cake @ 250 kg/ha before sowing in the soil. • Install one light trap in the field. • Do not sow maize one after another; follow crop rotation. • Collect & destroy the egg masses mechanically. • Apply Carbofuran 3 G @ 8-10 kg per hectare in leaf whorl at 20-25 days after sowing for effective control of stem borer. • On higher incidence of four spotted armyworm, spray Chloropyriphos 20 EC 20 ml or spinosad 45 SC 3 ml or Emamactin Benzoate 5 SG @ 4 g or Chlorantraniliprole 18.5 SC 3 ml per 10 litre of water. See that leaf whorl should be properly covered with spray. Change the insecticide at each spray. Dr. T. M. Bharpoda,_x000D_ Ex. Professor of Entomology, _x000D_ B. A.
