Control of Leaf Webber/ Leaf roller/ Capsule borer in summer sesame
Sesame can be cultivated in monsoon and summer season also.
Generally gall fly, leaf folder, hawk moth larva, jassids and aphids are damaging to sesame cultivated in summer season.
The young larva rolls together a few top leaves and feed by remaining in-side.
The farmer also known it as “Head tied larva”.
Larva also feeds on flowers and buds at the time of flowering.
There is no formation of pod on damaged bud and such portion remaining pod-less.
Later stage of the crop, larva bore the capsule and feed them internally.
At this stage, it is known as capsule borer in the farming community.
The economic loss is much more if the infestation is observed during the flowering stage than the vegetative and capsule formation stages.
Some of the parasites and predators are controlling to this pests naturally.
In off season, this pest is survived on Pedalium murex Linn, a weed host plants. Hence, periodically remove and destroy such weed plants during the crop season and also after over the crop.
Install the light trap after sowing of the crop to manage the adult population.
On initiation of the pest, spray Beauveria bassiana @ 40 g or neem seed kernel powder 500 (5% suspension) or any neem based pesticides @ 20 ml (1% EC) to 40 ml (0.15% EC) per 10 lit of water.
Spray quinalphos 20 EC 20 ml per 10 lit of water at 30, 45 and 60 days after sowing.
