Control of leaf eating caterpillars in soybean
Soybean crop is mainly cultivated in Madhya Pradesh in large area. Since last one decade, the cultivation of this crop is also increased in Gujarat and Maharashtra. Different leaf eating caterpillar’s viz., armyworms, Spodoptera, leaf eating caterpillar and hairy caterpillar (katra) are damaging to this crop. On hatching, small larvae scrap the upper layer of the leaves and feed chlorophyll. Bigger larvae feed on leaves and defoliate the leaves by making several holes. On heavy infestation, all leaves defoliate from the plant. Integrated Management: • Raise castor plants around the field. Adults of leaf eating caterpillars lay the egg mass on castor leaves. Collect and destroy the egg masses from the castor plant. • On initiation of pests, spray neem seed kernel powder 500 g (5%) or neem oil 50 ml or neem based formulation 20 ml (1 EC) to 40 ml (0.15 EC) in 10 litters of water during evening hours. Spray the same at 10 days interval on need base. • Spray SNPV (Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus) 250 LE in 500 litters of water per hectare during evening hours thoroughly.
• Spray Bacillus thuringiensis, a bacterial powder 15 g or Bouveria bassiana, a fungus base powder 40 g per 10 litters of water. • On heavy infestation, spray profenophos 50 EC 10 ml or dichlorvos 76 EC 7 ml or indoxacarb 15.8 EC 10 ml per 10 litter of water. • In shortage of water, apply quinalphos 1.5 dust @ 25 kg per hectare during wet period.
