Control of Aphids and Thrips in Cumin with Organic Farming
Cumin is cultivated in Gujarat, Rajasthan and other states. Under favourable environment, the incidence of aphids and thrips are observed which damage the crop. Reports from farmers are already coming up about the infestation of these pests in cumin crop at present. Both the pests suck the cell sap from the plants and may cause infestation up to the maturity of the crop. Prevailing of cloudy for longer period, the probability of aphid’s incidence is increased. The dry environment is conductive to thrips. Due to the infestation, plants turn yellow and dry off eventually. These pests are more common in January and February. To control these pests, follow the below measures: • Install yellow sticky traps for aphids @10 per acre. • Ladybird beetles, grub of Chrysoperla, larvae of syrphid fly like predatory insects feeds on aphids, these should be conserved. Avoid spraying of chemical insecticide on satisfactory
population. _x000D_ • On higher moisture content in air, spray Verticillium lacani, a fungal base insecticide @40 g per 10 litre of water in evening. _x000D_ • Spray neem seed kernel suspension @500 g (5%) or neem oil @ 30 ml + 10 g any detergent powder per 10 litre of water. _x000D_ • Spray neem base formulation @ 20 (1% EC) to 40 (0.15% EC) ml per 10 lit of water._x000D_ • For the control of thrips, spray Beauveria bassiana 1.15 WP (min. 2 x 106 CFU/ g) @ 60 g per 10 litre of water, first spray on the initiation of pest and second spray at 10 days after first spray. _x000D_ • For the control of aphids and thrips with botanical insecticides, spray neem oil @100 ml per 10 litre of water or garlic extract @5% on appearance of pests and second spray at 10 days after first spray. For, preparation of 5% garlic extract, 500 g garlic cloves to be crushed in required quantity of water followed by filtration and dilution in 10 litre of water. _x000D_ _x000D_ Source: Agronomy Centre of Excellence_x000D_ If you find this information useful, click on the yellow thumb impression below the photo and share it with your farmer friends through the options below.
