Central Government: Hike in Minimum Selling Price of Sugar
New Delhi. The central government has increased the minimum selling price (MSP) of sugar by Rs 2 and set a new selling price of Rs 31. According to the release issued by the Food Ministry, the minimum selling price of sugar has been increased from Rs 29 per kg to Rs 31 per kg, from which sugar mills will receive adequate amounts and sugar cane farmers' payment can be prioritized.
In the current crushing season (October to September), which began from 1 October 2018 to 13 February 2019, the outstanding
dues of sugarcane farmers increased to Rs 20,167 crore. According to the Ministry, the highest overdue amount of Rs 7,339 includes farmers from Uttar Pradesh, Rs 4,799 from Maharashtra farmers, and Rs 3,900 from Karnataka farmers. According to the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), total sugar production in the current crushing season is estimated at 307 lakh tonnes, compared with 325 lakh tonnes in the previous crushing season.
