Care for the goats - sheep during low-temperatures.
• The humidity levels in general as compared to other times are lower in the winter and the relative moisture content and the low temperature remains in the shed for a longer while. As the ground becomes cold it is advisable to keep the shed clean and dry so that so that the temperature in the floor does not get damp. The use of limestone or gravel on the floor reduces dampness and reduces ground temperature.
• When goats and sheep come in contact with this damp wet ground, their body temperature undergoes changes to resist the external cold damp temperature, which sometimes could cause obstructions in the blood flow in the body resulting in hoof or ear infections.
• The goat shed must always be positioned in the east west direction. This will enable the spread of proper sunlight into the shed, thereby ensuring that the temperature dips and dampness in the shed is avoided during winter as well as in monsoon.
• In winter both the onset, as well as spread of diseases is faster as bacteria and viruses are known to prevail longer in the damp and wet temperatures, It is hence advisable to wash the goat shed twice or thrice in a week with a suitable germicide. Washing the shed with hot water is also recommended.
• Keep the doors and windows of the shed open in the day so that there will be proper ventilation, and in the evenings and night ensure that the openings in the shed are shielded from the cold air by using gunny bags and sacks to cover and close them.
• If the goats-sheep are being reared in an open area, then a closed shed must be provided as a shelter from the cold in one corner. This will enable the goats and sheep to rest in the shelter at night and protect them from the cold.
• Provide mattress made up of hay or gunny bags for the young lamb and kid in the shed, which will help keeping their body warm.
• Provide high voltage and bright lamps at night in the shed. These bulbs ensure high energy and raise the temperature in the surroundings. Place the bulbs at a height of 4 to 5 feet from the ground.
• If provisions of electric bulbs are not possible, then a build a fireplace in the shed to generate warmth in the shed, but take care that the smoke does not harm the animals, as the smoke if inhaled could turn out to be dangerous and can also cause pneumonia.
• Separate the sick goats from healthy ones. This is because the disease spreads rapidly in the winter and therefore increases mortality.
• This is an ideal time of the year for the goats as well as the sheep to increase their body weight. Hence a diet or fodder in the ratio of ½ % of their body weight or100 to 250 grams of fodder is better provided.
• It is necessary for goats to be provided with both wet and dry fodder. Diet should always be prepared for more energy since a regulatory body temperature in cold conditions requires more energy.
• Provide goats with warm and clean drinking water. Since the goats do not drink much water in the winter, this could result in reduced water levels in their body. Hence as far as possible it is better to provide warm drinking water.
• Allow the goats, sheep, lamb and kids to wander freely in the sunshine during the morning hours. This will allow them to soak warmth and energy from the sun.
