Basmati Rice Exports Upsurge by 6.25%
During the first 11 months of FY 2018-19, basmati rice exports increased by 6.25% to 38.55 lakh tonnes during the first 11 months of April-February. A senior APEDA official said basmati rice exports increased to 38.55 lakh tons in the first 11 months of the current fiscal year 2018-19 compared to 36.28 lakh tons in the same period last fiscal year 2017-18.
Total exports of basmati rice is estimated to exceed three lakh tonnes in the financial year 2018-19 due to increased demand from Iran, Iraq, and the USA. Pusa 1,121 Basmati Rice Sella exports to Iran are rising from 82,000 to 84,000 rupees per tonne. Exports of non-basmati rice, however, decreased by 16.55% over the period and total exports reached 67.11 lakh tonnes. Non-basmati rice exports have declined due to the drop in African countries' imports along with Bangladesh.
