Agricultural Debt Waiver is a Temporary Solution
According to Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, the waiver of farm loans is only a temporary step to alleviate problems faced by farmers; there is a need to find long-term solutions to improve the agriculture sector. He also stressed the need to bring about structural changes in the agricultural sector through policy interventions at the central and state levels. He was at the opening ceremony of 'Agri-Vision 2019,' a two-day conference on 'imagining agro-solutions for smart and sustainable agriculture.' The main challenges faced by the Indian agriculture are lack of natural resources and devaluation, rapidly growing demand for food grains, one-level farm income, small land, climate change, and so on. Traditional agriculture would not be beneficial, and farmers would have to focus on related activities to ensure continuous income. Stressing the development of agriculture, Naidu said that empowering the agricultural sector will
benefit the livelihoods of millions of people in this field. The agriculture sector contributed 18% of India's GDP, providing jobs for 50% of the country’s workforce. Farming friendly markets, adequate cold storage facilities, food processing, timely subsidized farmers' loans and access to technology, must be given top priority.
