Agape rabi onion cultivation increases in the country
Pune - Rabi onion has been planted on 2.7 lakh hectares in major producing states since the first week of December. The Agriculture Ministry has reported 17% growth over last year.
However, arrivals in late Kharif, January and February are declining. Late Kharif has been planted on 98 thousand hectares, a decrease of 19% over the previous year. The productivity of this plant is also hampered by natural adversity, and alternatively, the supply of onion in January and February is likely to remain under control. The arrival of Agape rabi onion will increase from March. The above figures show the trend of increase in area.
In 2018, onion production in Kharif was 48 lakh tonnes and in Late Kharif 21 lakh tonnes, both together, 69 lakh tonnes was produced. In comparison, production of 39 lakh tonnes in Kharif in 2019 and 15 lakh tonnes in Late Kharif together is estimated at 54 lakh tonnes. That means it is projected to decline by 21% over 2018. This is a reflection of the decline we see in the current market. In particular, the balance stocks in 2019 were also significantly lower than in 2018.
