New Delhi. 21.29 lakh tonnes of sugar has been exported in the current cane crushing season in 2018-19 (October to September), whereas about 5 lakh tonnes of sugar was exported in 2017-18 which was in the last crushing season. According to the All India Sugar Trade Association (AISTA), 21.29 lakh tonnes of sugar has been exported from October 2018 to April 6, 2019, of which 9.76 lakh tonnes is raw sugar. Currently, 7.24 lakh tonne sugar is in pipeline for export. AISTA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) RP Bhagaria told that an agreement has been signed for exporting 3 million tonnes of sugar, of which 28.53 lakh tonnes has been sent from sugar mills.
There has been an increase in sugar exports due to the subsidy given by the Central Government. According to the AISTA, mainly sugar is exported to Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Somalia, Afghanistan and Iran. The central government has allowed export of 50 lakh tonnes of sugar during the period 2018-19 (October to September). Subsidy is also being given on transport facility to sugar mills for the promotion of sugar exports.
