Research on the variety of soyabean giving better yields in drought
Scientists have identified the genotype of soybean, which will help to develop a variety of soybean, whose production will not affect by the drought. Scientists of Indian Soybean Research Institute, Indore studied the sixteen genotypes of drought tolerant soybean. Sixteen varieties were kept in normal irrigated conditions. After this as an experiment water was not given to them, while some of the plants were given normal irrigation.
Dr. Virendra Singh Bhatia, a scientist from Indian Soybean Research Institute, said that four Soybean genotypes (EC 538828, JS 97-52, EC 456548, and EC602288) were considered to be drought resistant. These varieties have the ability to fight drought, these varieties are capable of taking water and nutrients efficiently from the soil in drought. Their leaves contain wax-like substances that prevent water loss due to transpiration. Soybean is cultivated primarily in rain-fed areas. Soybean is one of the fastest growing crops in India with 12 million tonnes of production. The top three soybean producing states are Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan.
