WTO Meeting will hold Discussion on Public Stockholding in Agriculture
New Delhi will host the meeting of 25 member countries of the WTO on May 13-14. This meeting aims to come out with a statement on critical issues including' special and differential treatment' for developing nations and impasse over the appointment of members to the dispute settlement appeal body. According to the sources, the other issues that could appear in the meeting include fishery subsidies and public stockholding in agriculture.
"The idea of the meeting is to discuss these matters in detail and 'special and differential treatment' (S&D) is the core issue which would be deliberated upon," as per sources. As part of WTO reforms, the US wants to formulate some guidelines. These guidelines will prevent countries with high economic growth from taking advantage of S&D, which is intended for developing and poor nations. In addition, the work of the WTO dispute settlement mechanism would be impacted as the US has placed roadblocks in the appointment of new members to the appealing body, which hears appeals against the dispute panel rulings. India also wants a permanent solution to the public stockholding of the food issue.
