Nitin Gadkari Urges Sugar Mill Owners to Switch to Ethanol Production
Trying to encourage sugar mills to shift to ethanol manufacturing, Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari said that ethanol will be effective in tackling the issues of excess manufacturing and falling prices. The mills may become dysfunctional if not changed to generating ethanol, the minister warned. At the conclusion of a Sugar Conference arranged by the Maharashtra State Cooperative Bank, he mentioned that surplus sugar production is a major problem that cannot be reduced and that it is also difficult to alter crop patterns. The sugar cooperatives are therefore urged to switch to ethanol, otherwise, the state will not be able to do much else. Gadkari said the Centre has a consistent, transparent and long-term purchasing strategy for ethanol. According to him, Maharashtra is slow in allowing sugar mills to convert sugar cane juice into ethanol and B-class molasses into ethanol. On the cost of manufacturing, he said farmers should be encouraged to use alternative fuels such as biodiesel and bio-CNG. Source: The Hindu, July 8, 2019
