Government Extended Ban on Milk Imports from China
The government has extended the ban on milk and its products’ imports China, including chocolates, to upgrade laboratories at ports to test the presence of toxic chemical melamine. Food regulator FSSAI recommended extending the ban until all ports laboratories are upgraded to test the chemical.
The ban was imposed on apprehensions of the presence of melamine in some Chinese milk consignments. Melamine is a toxic chemical used to make plastics and fertilizers. Although India is not importing milk, milk products from China, it has imposed the ban as a preventive measure. FSSAI stated that the ban on imports of milk and its products, including chocolates and chocolate products and confectionery or food preparations with milk and milk solids as ingredients from China, could be extended until the capacity of all laboratories at ports of entry has been adequately upgraded to test melamine. India is the world's largest producer and consumer of milk. It produces around 150 million tons of milk a year. Uttar Pradesh is the leading state of milk production followed by Rajasthan and Gujarat.
