Government Reduces Stock Limit of Onion
To reduce the price of onion, the central government has reduced the limit of onion stocks for retailers from 5 tonnes to 2 tonnes. The central government has also directed the states to take the necessary steps to counter hoarding to order to maintain onion prices under control. Union Food and Consumer Affairs Minister, Ram Vilas Paswan, tweeted that, in order to increase the supply of onion in the open market, the central government has further revised the limit for the storage of onion. At the same time, all state governments are asked to raid hoarders and take other strict action.
Earlier this month, the central government reduced the stock holding limit for retail onion vendors from 10 tonnes to 5 tonnes. During this period, the limit on stocking of onions for wholesale sellers was reduced from 50 tonnes to 25 tonnes. To deal with the rise in onion prices, the government has approved import of 36,090 tonnes of onions, out of which 21,090 tonnes of onions have already been imported, out of which 6,090 tonnes of onions were imported from Egypt and 15,000 tonnes of onions were imported from Turkey.
