Sugar Production Estimated at 265 Lakh Tonnes
Sugar production is estimated to be 265 lakh tonnes in the current crushing season 2019-20 starting from 1st October 2019. According to the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), sugar production is estimated to be five lakh tonnes more than previously estimated.
ISMA in its initial production estimate had released an estimate of 260 million tonnes of sugar production in the country, which was seven million tonnes less than last year's 330 lakh tonnes. According to the release issued by ISMA, sugar production in Uttar Pradesh is estimated to be approximately 118 lakh tonnes in the last crushing season 2018-19.
Sugarcane crop in Karnataka and Maharashtra was damaged due to unseasonal rains and floods and drought, due to which the sugar production estimates are expected to decrease. Maharashtra is expected to produce only 62 lakh tonnes in the current crushing season. Karnataka is estimated to produce only 3.3 million tonnes.
Sugar production in Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Bihar, Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Uttarakhand is estimated to be 52 lakh tonnes in the current crushing season, which is almost equal to the initial estimate.
