Sale of fake seeds will be banned from December!
New Delhi: For the sale of certified seeds it will be mandatory to put '2D bar code' on the packet/sack from December 2019. It aims to ban the sale of fake seeds. A senior official of the Ministry of Agriculture gave this information.
He informed that seed producer companies will have to give complete information related to seeds in packets/sacks in 2D bar code. Also, the 2D bar code will be connected to the central portal to provide this information digitally.
In the 2D bar code, the producer company will have to give the complete details of the producers, the code of the place of production, the code of the processing plant. In the case of GM / Bt cotton etc., it will be mandatory to give seed treatment and other information according to the Environmental Protection Act.
He informed that only the varieties notified under the Seeds Act are eligible for certification. Seed certification agencies are functioning in 25 states in the country. In states that do not have certification agencies, the emphasis is to create independent seed certification agencies. Seed certification agencies need to be strengthened by giving central assistance and farmers will be encouraged to use these seeds.
