Record Basmati rice export of 44.15 lakh tonnes
The export of basmati rice has increased by 9% to record 44.15 lakh tonnes in the financial year 2018-19. Increased demand from Iran has led to an increase in the export. According to a senior official of Agriculture and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), in Iran, the import demand for Basmati rice in the financial year 2018-19 has been high. He told that Iran was importing 6.5 to 7 lakh tonnes of basmati rice annually from India, but in the financial year 2018-19, Iran imported 1 million tonnes rice. Meanwhile, the import demand of the European Union has been low for Basmati Rice.
During the financial year 2018-19, the export of Basmati Rice has increased by 23 per cent to Rs 32,806 crore, whereas during the last financial year, only Rs 26,871 crore Basmati rice was exported. According to the export value of non-basmati rice, its export decreased during the financial year 2018-19 which was Rs 20,903 crore compared to the export of non-basmati rice worth Rs 23,437 crore in the previous financial year.
