Papaya - major diseases and preventive measures
Papaya is an important fruit grown in the tropical regions of the world. After banana, it is the highest yielding fruit crop and is full of medicinal properties.
Ring spot disease:
Ring Spot disease can be found, at any stage of Papaya plant. Symptoms of the disease appear on the top-most leaves, which are soft and affected leaves become pale and small in size. The surface of the leaf gets rough with an appearance of dark green blisters. The leafy tree becomes small and the leaves on the top stand. On the newer leaves, yellow mosaics and dark green areas are formed.
The cause of the disease:
A virus called Papaya’s Ring Spot Virus causes this disease. This virus can spread from Papaya plants to other nearby plants. It is generally spread through pathogenic insects, of which Aphid (Aphis Gossypii) acts as vector.
The typical symptom of this disease is the green mosaic on the leaves. Although, the leaves are not distorted like in papaya ring spot Disease. The remaining symptoms are very similar to the symptoms of papaya ring spot disease. This disease is caused by Papaya Mosaic Virus and is spread through Aphid (Aphis Gossypii).
Disease Management: The proper information regarding the eradication of viral diseases is not known yet. Therefore, by following the measures given below, the intensity of the disease can be reduced. • Keep gardens clean. In case of an infected plant, the residues must be destroyed by collecting them at one spot • To plant a new garden, healthy and disease-free plants should be selected • Diseased plants cannot be made healthy with any treatment. Therefore, they should be uprooted and burned; otherwise, they are a permanent source of the virus and can spread the disease on other plants. • In order to prevent pathogenic pests, insecticide drug Imidacloprid should be dissolved in 17.8% SL 0.3 ml per litre of water and sprayed regularly at an interval of 10-12 days.
